ELI Courses
If the student's English test score is below the level required to waive the ELI Placement Test and they do not qualify for an exemption, the student must take the ELI Placement test before the semester starts. This is mandatory. Depending on the ELI Placement Test results, the student may be placed into 1 to 3 ELI classes (intermediate or advanced). These classes will be taken with their other university courses.

Does the "three ELI courses" refer to a total of three classes for the semester, or are they a semester-long course that counts for credits?

Depending on ELI Placement test results, the student may be required to enroll in 1-3 ELI classes. Each ELI class has lectures throughout the semester. Here is information on what they can expect from the ELI courses: https://www.hawaii.edu/eli/courses/eli-courses/

If it's a semester-long course, how many credits does it count for? And is it included in the minimum 8 credits and maximum 16 credits required for graduate studies?

Each ELI course is the equivalent of 3 credits for registration and U.S. immigration enrollment requirements for F-1 students. However, any ELI courses numbered below 100 count as 0 credits on the final transcript report and may not be considered transferable back to their home university. Please find more information on the credit policy here: https://www.hawaii.edu/eli/courses/credit/

If the three courses exceed 8 credits, can I simply take the ELI courses and skip the other courses?

If the student wants to do that, it's fine with us. However it may mean that they have no academic credit transferable back to their home university. The grades on their transcript would appear as "CR" for credit received or "NC" for no credit but will not indicate any GPA.
